Toray Plastics (America) Inc. introduces new Lumirror® STM Soft-Touch Matte film, a unique, matte-coated polyester film technology that simplifies processing and
enables the manufacture of a robust, upscale, soft-touch matte lamination.
A package manufactured with Toray’s STM film has the appearance of a low-gloss, premium paper and a softer feel than traditional polyesthard plastic cuper film—characteristics that are very appealing to consumers.
Packages made by use of other soft-touch products have poor resistance to scuffing and abrasion. They can be damaged easily during transit and when larger packages are stacked in the retail environment. New STM film is inline coated using Toray’s proprietary film and coating technologies, which ensure overall high quality, consistency and advanced performance, says the company. The new film offers exc
ellent print adhesion, has no silicone transfer, and resists pick-off, scuffing and abrasion. It also offers a high, consiscustom disposable coffee paper cups with lidstent co-efficient of friction (COF) that helps larger bags to stay in place when stacked.
Pet food manufacturers, in particular, are interested in the new STM film, especially as a solution for their larger bags. Toray customers have observed that certain ordinary, offline- coated, soft-touch products are very susceptible to damage, whereas STM is not. They have also found that the look and feel of the new STM film make it a perfclear cups plasticect choice for smaller bags and pouches that are used for dog food and treats. The STM film can also be specified for use with health
ful snacks, nutrition bars, coffee, and other applications.
The demand for sustainable packaging among consumers and brand owners all over the world is growing at an exponential rate, which in many cases drives the demand to replace plastic packaging. A good reason for Bosch Packaging Tec
hnology and BillerudKorsnäs to intensify their successful collaboration.
“Developing sustainable packaging solutions is an urgent and challenging topic. New solutions must be sustainable and at the same time ensure efficient processing. By combining the expertise of BillerudKorsnäs in the field of paper-bas32oz plastic cup with lided packaging material with our technological know-how, we will be able to answer both challenges,
” says Dr. Stefan König, president of Bosch Packaging Technology.
One result of this enhanced collaboration is the development of a new packaging concept called Pearl. The aim is to show how uniquely formed and right
-sized small packages, called shaped paper pods, can contribute to a more sustainable future by utilizing the unique formability of the FibreForm material (3D-formable papersonalized plastic cups in bulkper patented by BillerudKorsnäs). The material is processed on machinery from Bosch Packaging Technology, who not only contributes longstanding expertise in forming, filling and sealing of a wide variety of materials to the cooperation but also ensures the subsequent industrialization of the newly developed technologies for commercial production.
In industries like beauty and personalcheap custom plastic cups care, bread spreads, savory and confectionery, single-use plastic packaging is widespread. “The goal is to support these industries with a sustainable packaging system and replace plastic in product samples, inserts, refills, portion packs and disposable packaging,“ says Simon Johansson, project manager of Packaging Solutions at BillerudKorsnäs.
Price sensitivity and how it is affected by package design, size and shelf layout can be precisely measured using eye-tracking technology. The key data lies in measuring ”fixations” – how long one’s eyes focus on a given area of a package, sign, shelf, etc. While a number of factors can influence shopper price sensitivity (defined here as: how often shoppers focus on prices compared to products), we’ve consistently found that package size and placement affect consumer price sensitivity.
When it comes to breakfast, yogurt and cereal are two leading categories that shoppers regularly purchase. In a recent study, executed in partnership widisposable coffee cups 4ozth the Ipsos Neuro and Behavioral Science Centre (ipsos-mori.com), shoppers were fitted witplastic cups wholesaleh eye-tracking glasses and asked to shop their grocery store as they normally would. The resulting data showed that among cereal shoppers (29 shoppers tracked) 94% of fixations fell on products and 6% on price; in the yogurt category (27 tracked, with overlap) 85% of fixations fell on products and 15% on price.
A major factor is how much space cereal packages occupy in relation to price tags on shelf. Larger packages, like cereal boxes, draw a greater share of shopper attention than do smaller packages, i.e. yogurt, which tend to be closer in size to their price tags.
In another study, consumers in mass merchant and grocery stores were asked to shop for personal care items, including cleaning and hygiene products. The results showed that package size again had an effect on price sensitivity. In comparing facial tissues, which tend to be sold in single or three package sizes, as compared to paper towels, which come in various sizes from singles to 18-packs, but are larger on average, the share of fixations on price was higher for facial tissues. The average across the stores surveyed showed that 10% of fixations fell on price tags in the facial tissue category, but only 7% on paper towels.
Relative size, as mentioned, can have a
major influence of how much shopper attention falls on price tags versus products. By this logic, sale tags – which are usually larger, more brightly colored and thus more app
ealing to shoppers – tend to draw more attention than do standard price tags. In one study, tags for regula
r priced items received 6% of fixations as opposed to 94% on their associated products. On-sale items in the same aisle received 18% of fixations compared to 82% on associated products.
While it should come as no surprise that sale tags receive greater interest and therefore greater notice than do regular price tags, it’s also true that when a product is on sale (identified by a sale tag) it draws additional attention. In the same example mentioned before, 58% of all the products in this particular grocery aisle were on sale (42% were regular priced – spread evenly throughout the aisle and shelves). However, the sale products accounted for 71% of product fixations in the aisle while products not on sale accounted for only 29% of fixations.
Surely, many factors regarding the size and shape of packages are constrained by product attributes. However, understanding how a package can influence sensitivity to price is important for developing in-store sales strategies. Larger packages that take up more space tend to equate to less time spent looking at price, while the inverse is also true. Sales on those products increase the likelihood that a greater share of attention will fall on price tags. These metrics vary depending on category and product-price point and, therefore, underline the importance of research-based approaches to gaining a more comprehensive understanding of retail package and display strategy.
Customers have started field testing Tetra Pak paper straws for beverage products in Europe. Tetra Pak is now the first carton packaging company to provide such straws for beverage
cartons in the region. The company also announced its intention to publish and share its innovations on paper straw developments to support industrial collaboration on the alternatives to single use plastic straws for beverage cartons.
Adolfo Orive, president and CEO, Tetra Pak said: “We have decided not to apply for patent protection on the numerous technical improvements we have made on the equipment and the materials, and instead put our innovations into the public domain. For the industry to achieve its common goal of driving towards a lodisposable cups fo

Made from FSC-certified paper and recyclable with the rest of the package, the new paper straw will be available initially for two small carton packages commonly uplastic disposable cups largesed for dairy and beverage products for children.
Field testing of the paper straw is beginning with limited volumes while the company increases production capacity at its straw plant in Lisbon, Portugal. The company also announced that it has been assessing technical advancements and working with a number of technolog
